Welcome
The Manx Detectorist Society came into being in October 2006 .
With it's inaugral meeting in Douglas .The Society was born out of a previous metal detecting club which was active in the Island in 1979 for approx 5yrs. The first meeting of the now M.D.S generated interest not only from metal detectorists but also from individuals who had diverse interest of varying degrees in the History and culture of the Island.
The Isle of Man of course has a rich history . and can look back on a tapestry of events from the introduction of farming in the fourth millennium BC, the Manx Iron Age from 500 BC to 500 AD, the Celtic traditions, through to Christianity and Viking rule of the ninth century.
Throughout the centuries the Isle of Man has developed a way of life and a culture all of its own. Many world events such as the Roman and Norman invasions of Britain passed it by and the Island quietly took visits of Irish and Scottish incursions in its stride. The arrival of the Vikings however, did leave a lasting mark on this small Celtic nation.
As metal detectorists we do on occasions find artifacts that can be dated to these times . Each artifact will tell a story some more exciting than others . From the everyday items that people have lost or mislaid throughout the centuries to the remnants of fierce battles fought against hostile invaders .
A lot of metal detectorists will try and research the history of many artifacts recovered from the ground .
This might be looking it up on the internet or a visit to the local library , or the Museum.
However, this all adds to the enjoyment and satisfaction found in the hobby.
